Standout Adventures, excellent tour operator
Sylvia -- Aug 24, 2010 02:17 pm
Hello, our names are Sylvia and Rolf from Bonn, Germany. We did a private trekking Tour and wildlife safari with Standout Adventures in May 2010 in Kenya. Standout Adventures made an excellent job, it was an absolutely enjoyable trip! We began our tour with a few days for acclimatisation in Aberdare National Park. Then we started to climb Mount Kenya up Sirimon with an extra night at Liki North Hut at 3993 m and down Chogoria. We have experience in trekking in higher altitudes, for example in Mongolia and in Nepal. With this background, we really can say: Everything was very well arranged, we always felt absolutely safe.
Our kind and well-informed mountain guide John made us feel to be in holiday as a couple. He and his team were friendly and cautious but always around. Follow their recommendation (pole, pole!) and you will stay healthy and happy.
Joseph, the excellent cook is a wizard in the kitchen. He is responsible to be this trekking tour our first without loosing weight. We cannot remember any meal without different courses and dishes.
We could write so much more about our fantastic first time in Africa, but we don’t want to risk trouble with the administrator.
Do not miss:
- Aberdare National Park, with the chance to see mountain elephants
- Try to reach the summit of Mt Kenya early in the morning to see the sunrise
- Choose sometimes a tent instead of a hotel to hear the sound of wildlife at night

Experience made with Stand Out Adventures

My name is Janet and I live in Canmore, Canada. I am planning a trek and safari with Stand Out Adventures and I asked for a reference and she gave me your contact details. Can you please advise what type of trip you did with Mary's company, the length, service, logistics, drivers, porters etc. We are just about to send our deposit but wanted to get a reference first.
Thanks very much.
my name is Martin, living in Cologne, Germany.
I was on 2 major trips with standout adventures so far. The first one was in July 2009, together with my 2 sons, 21 and 18 years old. We started out with climbing Mt Kenya. Sirimon up, chogoria down. We slept in tents, because the huts there are not really comfortable and sometimes sort of crowded. All the luggage was carried by porters, so we had to carry only small backpacks for our daily items, like a bottle with water, rain gear, camera and so forth. The group was guided by Mary Kariuki and her brother John as a second guide. She told me, that she always takes a second certified guide on the mountain treks, just in case, that somebody should need special care. I thought, this was a very responsible and professional way to take care of the clients. My older son had some problems with the high altitude, once we reached shipton's camp. He was taken care of very well and with a delay of half a day we reached the summit without any further problems. The cook of the expedition managed to serve tasteful meals, even high up on the mountain. I had the impression, that all members of the expedition were in high respect of Mrs Kariuki as the leader of the team. Everything went smooth, no items disappeared--- altogether a great experience.
After that, we went on a wildlife safari to different national parks. We started out at Samburu NP, we stayed in tents there (my sons and me like it the adventurous way). Vehicle, driver, cook, tents: All was to my full satisfaction. Not to speak about the great animal encounters we had. Especially the grevy's zebras, which are only to be found north of the equator.
From there, we drove via Aberdares NP (2 nights at fishing lodge) to Lake Nakuru NP for the flamingos.
Altogether, this 2 1/2 week vacation met all our expectations and even beyond that. We felt very welcome to Kenya and the whole tour was organized and guided in a way, that made me come back.
My sister Linda emigrated from Germany to US in the late fifties. Now she is 71 years old and we did not spend to much of a time together so far in life. Since she is a lot into painting and photographing, I thought, it would be a great idea to invite her for an african adventure over new years eve 2009/2010. There is so much to paint and to photograph down there....
Because of the very good experience, that I had made with standout adventures, I chose them again. This time 12 days safari, including Aberdares, Solio Ranch Game Reserve, Castle Forest Lodge, Chui Lodge and Masai Mara .
Again, all expectations were met and we felt very well taken care of. Since their car is equipped with VHF radio, the driver had all the information, where e.g. the cheetahs or the lions were to be found. We saw 4 out of the big 5 on our very first day.
The prices, we had to pay were the ones, we were given in the itinerary. So, no bad surprises on that side.
Well, out of my experience, I can very strongly recommend this company. From the pick up at the airport until your departure, you will feel, that you are surrounded by professionals, whom you can trust.
I wish you a great vacation in Kenya, all the best
We had an awesome time
Apr 22, 2009
As mentioned to you over the phone, we had an awesome time. Mary was waiting for us at the gate on the last day. She had travelled about 8 hours from Kenya to meet us! We were very happy to let her know that all three of us were able to successfully summit. Thanks to all the help given to us by John, Freddie and Ben who were kind enough to not only be extremely patient with us, but also help carry our day pack with water. John and his crew are really awesome and they were all genuinely looking out for us and took excellent care of us. Just cannot understand how Joseph managed to make 'chapathis' (Indian bread) from scratch for lunch on the day we summitted!! He also sent juice and snacks through some of the porters to meet us on the way back, as we might become hungry before reaching camp. Very thoughtful gestures!!! Thank you and Mary to have arranged everything that went very smooth.
Excellent value and solid operation

I am writing with a reference regarding Mary Kariuki and Standout Adventures. 9 friends and I traveled to Tanzania in December of 2007 to trek Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro-11 days lemosho route. We booked our package through Mary Kariuki, Mary and her brother John was our guides on our treks. All 10 of us made it to the top of both mountains, which we attribute to the extraordinarily good work by the team of guides and porters Mary provided for us. All of my connections were seamless, and Mary and her crew clearly put in a lot of personal effort and did an excellent job of making us feel welcome and safe, and we now consider all of them as new friends whom we miss and hope to see again soon. Special mention should be made of the fact that in spite of the troubles which were just breaking out in Kenya after our arrival and which clearly posed a serious threat to the well being of Mary, John, and their families, they never once dropped the ball, and followed through with their friendly professionalism in such a manner that we never would have known of the terrible stress they must have been under.
Based on our experience I can strongly recommend Standout Adventures as an excellent value and a solid operation.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any follow-up questions.
Always my first choice

My partner & I booked a tour with Mary for September 2005 and had a
wonderful experience both with the pre-booking and the actual tour.
They are extremely efficient, and attention to detail is second to
none - we were taken care of from the time we arrived! The guides and
porters are very attentive and knowledgeable, and I was amazed at what
they could prepare for meals high up on the mountain.
Since our trip with Mary, I have started a small company in Vancouver
doing hiking tours and will be taking a group to Kilimanjaro through
Mary & Standout Adventures. Mary and her company will always be my
first choice for clients going to East Africa.
I hope this helps and if you have any specific questions, please
contact me at the information below, I would be happy to help.
