We stayed here on a road trip from Dallas to Vegas and back. The place is really beautiful inside. Comfortably decorated lobby and seating area with a huge fire place. NO ELEVATORS which I understand, because the pace is old. The rooms are decorated like grandma's house, but were comfortable. Yet our friend's room hadn't been cleaned before they were sent to it, and they had to get another. They say the place is haunted, but I saw no evidence. The pool and spa are nice, but there is no food or drink allowed in the pool area. Although they are on top of the mountain, the views are limited due to the tall pines surrounding the hotel. The service leaves something to be desired. First, the coffee pot in my room didn't work, so I mentioned it to the hostess and she said she would have it taken care of. We swam with the kids and went to dinner at the highly overpriced restaurant. The service was slow and one red haired waitress kept banging plates and cups loudly on the table and didn't seem to take much pride in her job. Our drink orders took forever to arrive even though the bar is about 15 steps from our table, so we started ordering the next round early so we didn't have to wait. I am familiar with my brand of drink and I can safely say it was watered down. Not just the mixed drink, but straight up too. The steak and pork chop we ordered were both way overcooked. And in Dallas - a 28 dollar steak is considerably thicker than the 1/2 inch piece of leather the waiter brought to us. And would it kill ya to take the empty glasses off the table during our meal? But the 48 dollar king crab was delicious I hear. After all of this, I check back with the hostess about my coffee pot and she had completely forgotten so she began frantically trying to reach the maintenance guy to get it fixed before he went home. After we returned from a quick walk outside, the maintenance guy tells me it was because it was unplugged (as if I were such an idiot I wouldn't have checked that). When I explain that is not what the problem was, he hands me a new coffee maker, in the box, rather than going up and installing it. Whatever. I installed it myself. The next morning at around 7:00 I am sitting in the lobby drinking watered down coffee and working on the puzzle near the bar when all of the sudden the lobby music kicks on at maximum volume playing some James Brown tune and almost gives me a heart attack. They could probably keep the music off until later in the morning. I was enjoying the peace and quiet. They get the music turned down and then all of the employees start to gather and complain about customers who ask them to do things like deliver something to their room, and cussing like sailors the whole while. This place definitely wasn't worth the price we paid. It could really be something special if management sends the employees to customer service classes. But hey, Clark Gable and Judy Garland carved their names into the wall in the tower, so don't miss that. This is a good place for the old and wealthy, but don't expect anyone to carry your bags up.

My husband and I were extremely disappointed with the lack of customer service. There is no reason to pay double and triple to stay at this resort over the cabins and smaller hotels available in Cloudcroft.
