I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but our room was crumby. It felt like a dungeon because it was so dark and old. Our room wasn't even facing the water. I will definitely not stay at this hotel again even though the employees were friendly.

Our room was very small. And although it was obvious the carpet and bathroom were recently remodeled, the rest of the hotel was from the 50's. As we walked by the kitchen, you could see that it was very dirty. Glad we didn't eat there. The service was ok. Nothing special. Definately not worth what we paid for our stay.
Prime location, great hotel staff, overall delightful stay.

I initially had booked a standard 1-queen room a few days before arrival as this was the only type left. Given that my stay would just be an overnight, and that it was going to be a hot summer weekend at the beach (apparently near record temps were reached on August 3, 2012), I actually felt rather lucky to even have that.
After reading several reviews commenting on the vast superiority of the ocean front rooms, I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask for an upgrade upon check-in. I was pleasantly surprised that not only was there such a room available, but that the upgrade would be quite reasonably priced.
All I can really say is wow, wow, and WOW! What a difference! My mother, who I was traveling with, generally pooh-poohs such added expenditures, but even she was impressed by the full kitchen, marble counter-top, enormous room size, comfortable beds (2 queens in this room), and of course the ocean view with a balcony, which we were not expecting to have. In fact, the only minus (if it can be referred to as such) was that it was so unusually hot for Seaside that even with the windows open we needed to open the back door to properly circulate the air (I had brought a fan with us mainly to defer noise, though my understanding is the hotel may provide one on request); in other words, I believe the Shilo would have looked after this and any other issues had we felt the need to express them.
Some other comments to those who might be considering a stay at the Shilo: the location is as central to Seaside as you can get (nice for walking but could be a problem with noise; a fan is recommended for that), with a convenient parking garage (no additional cost to guests), and a complimentary glass of wine for each guest (which you can take up to your room, and for us was actually preferable to a generic continental breakfast as there are many fine eateries nearby). There is also a rather largish indoor pool, sauna, and workout area that we did not use (too many kids, and besides the fair weather during our stay rendered such amenities unnecessary).
During our brief visit, we did check out the connector room behind us facing the mountains, which was the "standard" type we had originally booked for. Although it is quite small by comparison, and I should add is short on privacy given the outdoor hallway, it would make sense for a budget traveler and/or 1-night guest. The hotel staff said that both rooms can be booked as a suite for less than what the two of them separately cost, which would be perfect for guests with a snorer in the party (pets can also stay for an additional fee). If you are planning on staying for any length of time beyond a single night, then the ocean view rooms (probably front or side; I did not see the "loft" rooms) are a must, and absolutely worth the upgrade.
In closing, I had previously only dined in the Shilo's restaurant, and had never before stayed in the hotel, but after this fine experience it will definitely be high on the list of places to consider for my next visit to Seaside. Heartily recommended!

We were at the beach during the hottest day of the year, the hotel had no air conditioning but did bring a fan to our room, the room was clean, but super hot, we left the window open but that did not help much, they also allow people to bring dogs to the hotel and leave them unattended, we had a dog next door that barked non stop for 3 hours we called the front desk and they said they would attempt to locate the dogs owner, after another 45 mins of listening to this dog bark we called again (12:15am) and told them that the dog was still barking, they finally found the dogs owner an hour later. If a hotel allows dogs ok, but they should not allow them to be left unattended.
The service in the bar for happy hour was awful we were planning on having a few drinks and an appitizer but had to wait too long just to get a glass of wine and a beer. The server was slow and did not come back to ask if we wanted another drink. so we found another bar down the street for the rest of our happy hour. I would not stay at this hotel again.
