First off this is not your standard holiday inn. If you're expecting that you may be let down. But I have to say that I was very impressed with the resort. We wound up in room 82 at the "ravens nest" group. Which may or may not be one of the newer groups. So take my review with a grain of salt, there may be older rooms, there may be newer rooms. But we had a blast. Our room had no AC, but that was not a problem since the daily temps were high 70s-ish and night time temps were nice and chilly and there is a ceiling fan. It was nice sleeping with the window open in July! The room was different than most hotels you've seen. Yes it is wood paneling, yes it's a little dated, yes it's a no-name round screen tv. But the view from the deck was worth it! The dining room was nice. Yes, it is a little pricey. However its almost an hour drive out and back to the next nearest restaurant so I wasn't too upset. A steak for 26 bucks isn't great, but it was a HUGE steak, and loads of potatoes. I asked for a medium and they served an excellent medium steak. I was pleased. The house wine wasn't too expensive and we enjoyed a bottle of red for something like 18 bucks. Not bad. The breakfast buffet was also a bit pricey at around 16 bucks but it was loads of good food. So I can't complain there either. The staff was nice and helpful and had tons of suggestions for activities in the area. The lobby was beautiful and the views are great. We only took a 2 day trip between shanendoah and DC, and only stayed at skyline for 1 day. The next day we stayed at a 4 star hotel in DC. And all we could say was. "we should have done 2 days at Skyland". We were so impressed that a 4 star hotel in the heart of DC seemed like a step down.

Realize you're staying at a national park and expect to have a more rustic experience and you'll be thoroughly satisfied. The views and bird song and air are all superb. The food is good and the local trout tasty. Service exemplary.

The staff is always friendly and courteous. My 3am check-ins present no problem and they're always willing to answer questions about activities even at that late hour. Rooms always clean. The view always beautiful. So many activities to do at Skyland and Big Mountain not to mention the miles and miles of trails. Guests are friendly and you will meet those who come every year...hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, families, couples, etc.

Restaurant has a great view; I've never had bad service nor bad food, but wait times around dinnertime will creep up to an hour. I usually go after the rush. They have folk performers to sing at night in the lodge bar and grill area. Summertime has campfires at night. Horseback riding available, but I've always been too busy to take advantage of. :)

Room was a standard hotel room size, small bathroom with tub. Patio screen door opened to a breathtaking patio or balcony depending on your floor. Average rate was $104 for the 10 days I spent there. To me, the location and atmosphere and peaceful serene is well worth the price; I've never considered staying anywhere else. Resort is on mile 41 of Skyline Drive, but although it sometimes seems far removed from 'real life', you're really not too far away from civilization; there is a SuperWalmart in Luray, VA about a 35 minute drive from the resort, down the mountain, which you may find yourself at if you forget what time the restaurants close at.

FYI There will not be "luxuries" you may expect from a hotel...don't expect a TV and there will be no A/C, microwave, or compact fridge. For me, it's a nice change of pace that I look forward to every year.

Room was smaller than a standard hotel room, with a tiny bathroom. Very strong musty smell in carpet and throughout room. Hot; had no air conditioning. I don't think it's appropriate for a family or for anyone with asthma.
