My wife and I were regular guests at Hotel St-Denis for many years of annual trips to Montreal. We went back in 2013 after a hiatus of about seven years. We found that the hotel retained all the things we liked about it from before, but it has undergone remodeling that makes the rooms even nicer.
I cannot say enough about what a great location this is. Rue St-Denis (right in front of the hotel) and Rue Ste-Catherine (cross street half a block from the front door) are two of the most lively and interesting streets in downtown Montreal. You are 1.5 blocks from the Berri-UQAM Metro subway station, a hub that provides direct access to three of Motreal's four subway lines. There are two nice restaurants on the same block as the hotel and many more within easy walking distance.
However, on top of the great location, the hotel itself is very nice. It's clean. It's modern (since the remodeling). The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was not huge, but if you're not going to spend a lot of time in the room (and why would you?), it's very adequate -- not cramped at all. The bathroom was clean, well-kept, and brightly lit. There was a nice desk in the room. And it's not expensive.
The hotel does not offer breakfast and the adjacent Pacini restaurant is kind of pricey and unimpressive. If you want a hot breakfast, though, the 24-hour A&W restaurant on the same block (along Rue Ste-Catherine) serves breakfast sandwiches and bacon-eggs-and-toast platters.
Overall, if you want a great home base for exploring Montreal, you couldn't do better than Hotel St-Denis.
Great little hotel for the price, excellent location, friendly staff

Though the pictures on the website make the hotel look larger and more elegant than it actually is, the Hotel St. Denis is a fine lower priced hotel for Montreal. The Hotel was clean, the staff friendly and polite, but the room was small and there were signs of age and wear on the fixtures and carpets. We'd stay there again, as we felt comfortable and secure. Within walking distance of the old town, arts, port and entertainment districts, you won't spend much time in the room anyway. Flatscreen tv and wireless internet worked well. Metro stop around the corner, and bus station a block away make for convenient transportation. Cab rides are fixed at $38 Canadian from the airport to centre ville Montreal as of July 2011, but there's a bus to and from the airport for much less.

We had a wonderful time at the Hotel St. Denis. The staff were very helpful and accomodating, and the quality and cleanliness of the rooms was excellent. The bathroom was small but efficient and well ventilated, and the bed was completely comfortable for two. We had a room with a jacuzzi which was absolutely perfect after a long day of hoofing it around town to see the sights. Our lovely hotel room felt much more expensive than it really was. We'd stay there again and recommend it highly.
