The outside walkways were frozen with big slippery ice slicks, so getting in and out of the car to the room was a difficult experience. The breakfast room with jammed and there was nothing special being offered. I would not choose this hotel again, although the location was relatively close to downtown Taos.

After check-in we headed to our room. After a very inconvenient trip from the parking lot to the second floor room due to the stairs being on the backside of the building we unpacked. After unpacking we could not find the TV control. We called the front desk and were told we could either not use the TV or change to a room that had a controller. After several questions we were told to come to the front desk to get keys to the room with a working TV. They indicated that they did not have the time to bring the keys to us or help us move our luggage. I went to the front desk and retrieved the keys, went to the room and moved all luggage to the replacement room, and never had one inquiry if all was ok. Very sad as a little extra effort on their part would have gone a long way. Ultimately it did all match - the appearance of the facility, the service, and the overall condition of the rooms. Stay at a major chain in Taos.
The Whitten Inn in Taos is the definition of "run-down".

Hotel staff was average. Overall facility is in need of much cleaning and work. We had to step through a couple of broken beer bottles in the parking lot at base of stairs. The stairs, sidewalks and exteriors of rooms all need a good sweeping, cleaning, pressure-washing and paint. The room itself was nicer than the outside would indicate.
Continental breakfast......forget it. This hotel must have close to 100 rooms yet the breakfast area will only seat about a dozen people. One waffle maker, cold coffee, no cereal.....you get the picture.
Poor value for the money. We will not stay there again.

I have stayed in the Whitten Inn twice now. I booked my last trip two days before New Year's Eve. The staff was very helpful with reservations and my worries about the winter traveling. The room was warm and quiet, with a coffee pot, fridge and microwave. The staff was courteous and helpful. I plan to stay at the Whitten any time I am lucky enough to visit Taos.
