Positives: Close to the theater, Central Plaza, the Popes Palance, and the Avignon bridge. If you park at the Popes Palace parking lot they can scan the ticket for 40% discount on your parking fee.
Negatives: Room was tiny and the floorplan was unusual. Bed had bed bugs! Not recommended for a good nights sleep since the garbage trucks pickup around 4am. Plus due to its location to the Plaza you get a good dose of the young kids being loud all night.
Overall, I would recommend spending one day in Avignon then get back into the car and stay at a bed and breakfast in a more secluded village. Avignon is a developed town and has an overall seedy feel about the place. It isn't romantic and there are a lot of vagabonds causing noise and scenes of anarcy around the place.

The front desk clerks were always very friendly and helpful. When I tried to muddle through some limited French vocabulary, the clerks were quick to speak English while still making me feel very welcome. I've been to some hotels in America where the clerks say the right things but their eyes betray their indifference. I did not get that feeling here.
We did not buy the breakfast, so I cannot comment on it.
Our ""superior"" room on the fourth floor overlooked the square (place de l?horloge). It was November and cold, so there didn't seem to be a lot of activity. Just across the square diagonally is the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). Very close. And everything inside the old city wall is in walking distance. In fact, we walked with luggage from Gare Avignon Centre to the hotel quite easily straight up Rue de la R?publique.
The room itself was just large enough for my wife and me. The double bed was comfortable. The TV had a clock built in, but I did not see whether it had an alarm as we did not need one. The bathroom was nice, but the bathtub was different. It had a handheld shower head but no place to anchor up high and no shower curtain. So it is a bit different to the showers and tubs we're used to.
