A lot of marine research goes on in this sanctuary because it is extremely deep very close to shore.

Local attractions include the Redwood Forests, excellent golf, the Beach Boardwalk historic amusement park which has an awesome roller coaster right on the beach! Boats are available for sunset cruises, Roaring Camp Railroad gives steam train rides up in the mountains, and the wine tasting in the Santa Cruz appellation is superb.
