Paria Springs offers a variet of eco adventure tours hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or birding through rainforests, wetlands or along rugged coasts. We offer lodge and community based accommodations deep in the rainforest or on stunning coasts

Deep in the heart of the Northern Range, surrounded by rainforest, is a place called Brasso Seco, Paria. Sheltered from the fast pace and hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle that is Trinidad&8217s eastwest corridor, lies this sleepy and relaxed community where traditions of cooking with roucou, pound plantain or breadfruit, being kind, courteous and neighbourly are the norm. Hands are tough from wielding cutlasses in gardens while farming and faces break into warm generous smiles at first glance. Harvest Festivals and Family Days are annual events to which family, friends, well wishers, and those out for a relaxed afternoon of great of culinary delights are invited. This is contrasted and complemented by the rugged yet stunningly beautiful rainforest covered mountains surrounding the village and coffee and cocoa plants.

Paria Springs EcoCommunity is proud to announce its first accommodations will be located in this community. Several community members have repaired homes, annexes and rooms to accommodate guests. Available are single and double rooms, along with two houses. The current total number of rooms stands at eight, and more rooms are being prepared for guests as this is being printed.

PARIA / ARIMA / BLANCHISSEUSE ROAD
In order to catch the birds depart at 700am. Slowly drive along the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, along the road the forest drapes its long branches over the road giving you a good view of the forest birds as they move in the branches. As you stop and take short strolls along the quiet road you will see many birds, such as Trogons, Woodpeckers, Spinetails, Channelbilled Toucans, Humming birds, Crested Oropendolas diving in and out of their meter long nests, and at the higher elevations you may see Speckled or Bluecapped Tanagers, most of the time in the background you will hear (and maybe see) the loud and distinctive call of the Bearded Bellbird.

At vantage points where there are breaks in the forest you will have a beautiful view of the valley below you, and the mountain range as it spreads before you. As this area is the windward side of the Northern Range there are serious up drafts. Cruising on these up drafts are several Swifts, Vultures, and birds of prey, such as Ornate HawkEagles, Gray Hawks, and Black Hawks.

Drive down to the North Coast at Blanchisseuse and have a lovely lunch there in a restaurant near to the beach. After that take a short time to relax. Then do some birding along the Marianne river mouth where you may see a Silvered Antbird or a Green Kingfisher. Absorb the beauty of Trinidad&8217s rugged North Coast as you see Pelicans, Terns, and the Magnificent Frigatebird.

Ease your way back on the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, along the way stop at any opportune place to see any birds that may appear as they do their evening feeding.

Price US$45

CARONI WETLANDS
Head off to the flat lands of central Trinidad. Visit the fragrant but rich in birdlife, Trincity sewer ponds, featuring a huge gathering of herons and shorebirds, Least Grebe, Sandpipers. Then the Caroni rice fields to see many Herons, Egrets, Savanna Hawks, Masked Yellowthroats, Least Bittern, Pintails, Yellowhooded Blackbirds, Swallows and much more. Here you may also see Ospreys fishing, Caimans cruising, as the beautiful Wattled Jacana hops from lily to lily, along side the exquisite Purple Gallinule. After this we head to Waterloo for lunch and shore birds, lots of Terns, Gulls, Whimbrils, Skimmers and the like.

Spend the evening in the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. A sturdy boat will take you through the swamp, where you will see many beautiful birds, such as Snowy Egrets, several types of Herons, and possibly a Common Potoo or a Rail. If you are lucky you may see a Silky Anteater or a Tree Boa. With the setting sun, the boat stops as thousands of the exquisite Scarlet Ibis fly overhead to land in a clump of red mangrove trees to roost for the night. A never to be forgotten spectacle! Not to be overlooked are Green Kingfishers, Bicolored Conebill, and Neotropic Cormorant.

The walks are easy and a sturdy boat will carry you through the swamp.
