Tingatinga Art has its roots from the Makua tribe of the Lindi region in Southern Tanzania. For many years this tribe has being using this form of art to portray their culture and tradition. Paintings depict simple African anmimal designs, birds on the savannah or situations from village life. Modern tingatinga uses enamel paints on canvas incorportating new, bold, colourful and humorous designs with detailed compositions. They portray Tanzanian work, people, life, the entertainment scene, as well as the harmony between man and nature. Said to test the boundaries between tourist art and genuine talent, it provides livelihoods for hundreds of painters.
