Baisikeli Maridadi is a 16 day camping cycle tour from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam using remote back roads and visiting local families and villages along the way. Our route varies from the chaos of Nairobi city to the sudden sparseness of open savannah with wildlife grazing the plains. We pass beneath the imposing Mt Kilimanjaro, visit Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Ngorongoro Crater and Saadani National Park in Tanzania before heading for mountain rain forested Usambara Mountains and ultimately the tropical Indian Ocean coast.

Biking far from the tourist routes you will experience Africa at face level i - you'll view wildlife from the saddle of your bike, meet Maasai tribesmen and camp in the wilderness under a cloudless African sky.
Typical Daykeyboard_double_arrow_up
What is the biking like?

We ride between 20-105km per day; a total distance of 560km spread over 12 days of biking. The terrain is flat and gently undulating; and the riding surface is made up of 80% dirt roads, 15% paved roads, and about 5% non-technical single track so a mountain bike with front suspension is the ideal bicycle. The trip is suited to riders with a good level of cycling fitness and some off-road biking experience will add to the enjoyment of your trip.

The Low-down

Your trip will start in Nairobi in Kenya and finish in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Your group will be made up of 10-12 bikers from around the world and our Escape Team of three trip leaders. Our trusty support vehicle carries all your luggage, has lunch, snacks and water at hand, and is always there if you feel like a break from the saddle. Accommodation includes four nights in local guesthouses on a twin-share basis and 11 nights camping in spacious dome tents. (Upgrades to rooms are available at some campsites at your own expense). We take care of your meals and snacks throughout your journey with us; this excludes one lunch and two evening meals which give you the opportunity to explore and experience local cuisine of your own choosing. Also included in your trip are three game parks Amboseli National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Saadani National Park, and a visit to a rural primary school.

Age range, type of groupkeyboard_double_arrow_up
The 'typical age' of our bikers again is not very typical. Most are in their 40's, 50's and 60's but there are always some outside this 'the typical' to break the rule! Our small groups (maximum 12) are made up of singles, couples, friends, families We generally prefer our bikers to be 14 years and above (although are happy to consider younger bikers, especially on our family trips, if they are comfortable in adult company).
Sleeping and mealskeyboard_double_arrow_up
Depending on which of our trips you join - your accommodation will be in guesthouses and lodges or if in Africa we provide spacious dome tents. We provide most of your meals which are prepared for you by your tour leaders. We do also visit some local cafe's and restaurants along the way, to give you the opportunity to experience local cuisine. We most definitely are able to cater for vegetarians and special diets, and if this includes you, it is essential to advise us of this before your tour begins, so that the support vehicle can be stocked with the necessary supplies. An example of typical meals during a trip: Breakfast - Fresh fruit, cereal, toast, cooked breakfast on occasions, hot drinks. Lunch - Picnic style lunch, fresh salads, cold meats, cheese, fruit, nuts, bread etc.Evening - Good wholesome camp-cooked meals using as much local fresh produce as possible.

We are a small New Zealand based company and we are passionate about riding our bikes. We lead adventurous cycle tours in adventurous locations around the world and adventurous mountain biking tours here at home in New Zealand. We are driven by the reward that comes with creating and leading tours that will touch your soul and stay in your memory forever.

Our Philosophy

Whether you join us on an international cycle tour in one of our favourite corners of the world or a remote mountain biking trip in New Zealand's back country the underlying philosophies that guide us how our trip is created are the same…

A Bunch of Mates on Tour. We strive to create a relaxed, fun and intimate group dynamic that feels like a group of friends on holiday. Our trips are led by our own wonderful Escape leaders who each bring their own unique characteristics but share our philosophies and understand your needs. You will get a strong feeling of organization, trust and professionalism. Our personalized groups are small enough to integrate into local communities without taking over and mean that we can offer the best of ourselves and pay attention to the little things that make a difference.

Unforgettable Journeys, Remarkable Places. What we do, where we go and how we get there are fundamental. We love the challenge of finding the most interesting cycling routes and destinations. We know the places we go intimately, have found the quirks and have nurtured relationships along the way so that you can truly immerse yourself in the remarkable places we visit.

Real Adventures, Real People in Real Places. Real adventure contains an element of the unknown. Because we travel to less travelled places, visit and stay with local families and include trips into wilderness environments the unexpected will happen! It is our aim to provide you with as many unique opportunities as possible and let you have your own unique personal encounter.

The Natural Environment. We are personally committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. We believe in taking time to think about how our actions can benefit or how they impact the people, communities, economies, environments and eco-systems we visit, and then use this to make a difference (or sometimes more appropriately - how we can NOT make a difference).
