Arrive in Makassar and transfer to the capital of the ethnic Toraja area. This group is famous for their dancing, carving and elaborate funeral ceremonies and you will learn about their culture over the next two days.

Drive south to dramatic villages surrounded by cliffs known as ‘the death at the balconies’. Graves cover these cliffs, along with hanging effigies of deceased nobility. See more graves which have been dug into the trunks of trees; the traditional Toraja method for burying babies.

Have lunch in a traditional wooden house and learn about the spiritual significance of Torajan architecture. Next, visit a village where wooden coffins are suspended over the cliffs using ropes and poles.

Pay a visit to a busy Buffalo market; a great way to immerse yourself in everyday life. Trek through different Toraja villages meeting with locals and seeing more of their traditional rituals and customs. Go to a Todi weaving factory where the ancient weaving methods of Toraja are preserved.
