Just 20 minutes from the motorway and four miles from the southern tip of Lake Windermere, the village of Cartmel is uniquely set in the heart of gentle
countryside. For many people, it is the most attractive village in southern Lakeland. The fourteenth century gate-house and the handsome buildings around the market square and in the narrow streets nearby are of continuing
interest to visitors. In the centre of the village, between two rivers, lies the
twelfth century Cartmel Priory with its tower set diagonally. The Priory was
saved from destruction when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries and
today it is still the village church. Cartmel has changed little over the centuries
and offers all the amenities of village life with a post office, grocer, several
gift shops and four public houses popular with visitors and locals alike. To
many people Cartmel is best known for its race-course, just a few yards
from the village square where meetings are held in May and August, and
which is also home to the village cricket team. The area is renowned for its
mild climate generated by the Gulf Stream washing Morecambe Bay and
nearby Grange-over-Sands has a higher temperature in spring than any other
place in the north of England. The site chosen for Cartmel Priory was
sheltered from strong winds by surrounding hills and offered the monks, as it
does today's visitors, a pleasant haven at all times of the year.
