Please note that routes may vary as most of Mongolia has no formed roads, and day-to-day hazards including river heights, mean that we may have to change our proposed route.
Day 1: Arrive Ulaan Baatar- Mongolia. Arrive Mongolia; you will be met by myself and our Crew. Depending on arrival numbers pick will be by Bus or car. Check into Hotel and settle in, meet for welcome dinner. Hotel accommodation. (D)
Day 2: Ulaan Baatar. Escorted tour with a local guide of this history-rich city. Ulaan Baatar is the first recorded capital city of the recent Mongolian Empire, and was created in 1639. Today is a chance for you to shop and sight-see around Ulaan Baatar, and get a feel for the largest city in Mongolia. Hotel accommodation. (B, D)
Day 3: Ulaan Baatar " Rashaant 305 KM. Time to be introduced to your bikes, and we have an early start and bus ride from Ulaan Baatar to the Workshop. It won't take long before we are on the dirt trails and heading west. Conditions vary considerably, a good opportunity to get accustomed to the bike, and the riding conditions. Late in the day the scenery changes to desert, sand dunes and camels as we enter the far northern Gobi region.
Day 4: Rashaant - Kharhorin 150 KM. A relaxed start to the day and then we're onto the off-road trails. Lunch will be at the first recorded Turkish city - this is the place where the Turkish people first appear in history as a nation. We then head for Kharhorin, where in 1220 the famous Warlord Genghis Khaan built the Mongolian capital. Ruins of this Imperial City can still be seen today. Also based here is Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist Monastery in Mongolia. Accommodation - Ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Kharkhorin " Tsenher (Hot Spa). 230 KM. Follow the Orkhon River west from Kharkhorin. This is a picturesque region of long valleys surrounded by mountains. Forests begin to appear and also signs of ancient volcanic activity. Crossing a pass at 2217 m and then into a braided river valley. We'll cross this river at least a dozen times today. Overnight in a Ger Camp at thermal hot springs area.
Day 6: Tsenher. (Hot Spa) 80+/- KM optional. Rest Day " time for a relaxing soak in the hot pools. Maybe a horse-trek, catch up with laundry or there is an optional half-day trail ride in the nearby hills and valleys " 80 +/- KM Trail Ride
Day 7: Tsenher " Khorgo Uul/White Lake. 217 KM. Today we head North West through low hills heading for Tariat. Tariat National Park is home to the Khorgo Uul volcano, and it's Crater Lake (aka White Lake). Morning coffee/tea break in the town of Tsetserleg. Lakeside Ger Camp location tonight, could be yak for dinner tonight?
Day 8: Khorgo Uul/White Lake " Jargalant 90 KM. Start the day with a trek to the top of the extinct volcano for some great photos. A shorter ride day today following the sandy, edge-of-the-lake trails, through grassland and valleys, to our destination of Jargalant. Accommodation - Ger camp (B, L, D).
Day 9: Jagalant " Mörön. 175 KM. Mörön is the provincial capital of this region and has a hospital (of sorts), a museum, a theatre, a post office, several schools and kindergartens, as well as one of the biggest outdoor markets in the country. Despite having all this, the town looks like it has been transplanted from an 1880's Wild West movie. Our kids keep asking for a T-shirt with the name of the town on it " but we've yet to find one as perhaps the locals don't realise the relevance of the name of their town in English. There are shops/supermarkets here so it is great opportunity to stock upon munchies if you need to.
Day 10: Mörön " Lake Hovsgol. 155 KM. At 1,645 m above sea level, 136 km long and 262 m deep Lake Hovsgol is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia's fresh water, and 2% of the world's freshwater. The surface of the lake freezes over in winter. The ice cover is strong enough to carry heavy trucks and transport routes were driven on its surface as shortcuts to the normal roads. Lunch at Khatgal then to our Ger Camp on the seldom visited eastern shoreline of Lake Hovsgol.
Day 11: Lake Hovsgol. O KM. Free Day to swim (brrr), fish, rest, catch up on some laundry or maybe a horse ride or a trek. Bike maintenance day on our motorbikes and servicing of the park rangers Yamaha AG200 motorbikes.
Day 12: Lake Hovsgol " Selenge Valley. 255 KM. The journey today is through a semi-mountainous region with river valleys and open pasture. This is true Big Sky country. The Selenge River that runs through this valley snakes its way through the Mongolian countryside all the way to Lake Baikal in Siberia.
Day 13: Selenge Valley " Orkhon River Valley 180 KM. Awesome Selenge riverside, and valley trails on the way to the Orkhon River area. A relaxed days ride to the Orhon River Valley region. Set up camp on the banks of the river.
Day 14: Orkhon River" Ugiy Nuur. 130 KM. An early start sees us heading east on our return loop toward UB. Follow the Orkhon River for a while then vast valleys to Lake Egginuur. Hot showers (oh yeah, forgot to mention that some ger camp are a bit useless at having hot showers ☺) and lake fish for dinner (it is white fleshed and yum" just gotta look out for all the bones).
Day 15: Ugiy Nuur " Hustai Camp. 270 KM. On the homeward leg now, riding the wide-open spaces on the Mongolian Steppes and seemingly endless valleys. Lunch in the countryside, then on to Hustai, home of the Przewalski's wild horse.
Day 16: Hustai camp " Ulaan Baatar 120 KM. Up early is the best time to try and see the Przewalski's wild horse, only a few 100 of these animals remain on the planet. The Przewalski horse - Takh in Mongolian - is the sole surviving genuine wild horse in the world, (not to be confused with, for instance, the mustang, a descendent from domestic breeds gone wild). Today is the last day's riding. Gravel and sand feature, and watch out for the wash-outs!
ETA workshop 12:00 hrs. Check in to our hotel, clean up and meet for our final dinner, and drinks, as a group.
Day 17: Ulaan Baatar. A final day in and around Ulaan Baatar, Free Day checking out some sights and any last minute shopping. Later in the evening we'll enjoy our second farewell dinner, and drinks.
Day 18: Depart Mongolia. Pick up from hotel travel to airport. Note check out time 12:00
