Wisconsin's Door County penninsula is rich in history, natural beauty, and a thriving arts scene. A welcoming atmosphere of community pervades the county. Integral to this community is the music scene of Sturgeon Bay. The county seat, Sturgeon Bay is a bustling little city with a full calendar of community events, street festivals, and fine arts performances. Each year in June, Sturgeon Bay hosts the Steel Bridge Songfest, a singer/songwriter showcase begun by a group of preservationists and musicians in order to raise money to save the endangered historic Michigan Street Bridge. The effort was a success, and now the annual festival raises funds for the bridge's (and other local historical sites') maintenance. During Steel Bridge, singers and songwriters fill the Holiday Motel, where they collaborate in the creation of new music for the Steel Bridge Songs albums, which are also recorded at the motel. The Holiday also hosts an annual Halloween songwriters' event called Dark Songs, wherein musicians gather to write original music together for a week, culminating in several live performances in local venues over the Halloween weekend. One block north of the waterfront and one block south of Sturgeon Bay's Third Avenue, home of the city's best shops and dining, the Holiday is THE place to stay in the heart of downtown Sturgeon Bay!
The motel's grounds feature ample free parking, well-maintained gardens, and a beautiful tree-lined lawn where guests can relax in white adirondack chairs, have lunch at a picnic table, or enjoy a crackling campfire by night. The exterior of the building looks much the same as it did when it was first built in 1952. Inside, however, you will find the motel has been lovingly restored. Great care was taken to ensure the recent renovation did not compromise the historical charm of Door County's first-ever motel, but the changes that have been made make the Holiday a comfortable as well as interesting place to stay. Using exclusively environmentally-friendly construction materials and building practices, the motel was renovated to include brand new carpeting, mattresses, linens, and funky, retro-print drapes, contributing to the clean, inviting atmosphere and complementing the 1950s laqured metal frame Simmons writing desks, bedside tables, bench seats, and lounge chairs that are original to the motel and can be found in each guest room. The walls are hung with original works by local artists, and the hand-blown glass light fixtures were created especially for the Holiday by Sturgeon Bay's Popelka Trenchard Glass. In the cozy lobby you will find an accoustic guitar, a ukulele, a one-string bass, and a cajon on hand, all available for guest use.
