Our three-star quality independent hostel offers simple B&B-style accommodation in shared rooms in Grasmere, the heart of the Lake District.

We provide flexible accommodation, catering to individual bookings, family rooms, small groups and large groups.

Quoted prices for beds in the main house include complimentary continental breakfast. Quoted prices for beds in the Annexe do not include breakfast.

With over 50 bunk-style beds these are arranged in 2 bed, 4 bed, 6 bed and 10 bed rooms.

Once your booking has been confirmed you can additionally order breakfast, lunch or evening meals. We prefer evening meals to be ordered in advance of arrival. We also have film nights - see our website for details.

Our hostel is a family-owned and operated traditional Lakeland residence with private grounds. A kennel is available for dog

Directions


Thorney How is best accessed via Easedale Road in Grasmere.

Travelling by car:
From the A591 traveling north, on approaching Grasmere go past the roundabout junction near to the Wordsworth Trust-signposted Grasmere Village. Instead, take the next left hand turn 1/2 mile further on also signposted Grasmere Village and opposite to The Swan Hotel.

This is Swan Lane (B5287) leading to Broadgate. Follow this into the village for 1/2 mile - Easedale Road is immediately on the right as you reach the village green having just passed the Coop Store. Follow Easedale Road for 1/4 mile - you will go past Butharlyp How YHA, several small groups of houses and over a small bridge.

At a junction Thorney How Hostel is signposted right 400yds.

Follow the narrow winding and rising lane past a group of houses and woodland. Thorney How is then on your left - an unmade track leads uphill for about 50yds. If you pass this track you will reach a farm and eventually come back to the A591.

Traveling south:
From the A591 approaching Grasmere shortly after the first 40 mph sign either take a right hand turn on a sharp bend opposite a post box, currently unsignposted leading to a single track lane. Follow this to a small bridge. Take the left hand fork after the bridge onto another narrow lane with limited passing places for approximately i mile. After passing a farm on the right the road twists and drops down hill. A right hand turn leads to an unmade track leading uphill for about 50yds by a Grit Bin. If you pass this track you will eventually come back to Easedale Road and into Grasmere village.

Alternatively take the next right hand turn opposite the Swan Hotel signposted Grasmere village and follow directions as for traveling north above.

By public transport:
National Express Coaches stop in Grasmere. Local bus 555 to / from Windermere & Keswick.

The nearest local train service is Windermere, with the nearest national line station at Oxenholme Lake District.

On foot:
Thorney How is situated just i mile form Grasmere village centre and is directly on the Coast to Coast path. Grid ref: 332084.

From the bus stop in Grasmere centre follow Easedale Road leading north from the village green for 1/4 mile i you will go past Butharlyp How YHA, several small groups of houses and over a small bridge (Goody Bridge).

At a junction Thorney How Hostel is signposted (small brown sign) right 400yds.

Follow the narrow winding and rising lane past a group of houses and woodland. Thorney How is then on your left i via an unmade track that leads uphill for about 50yds by a Grit Bin.

Situated just below Helm Crag walking routes are easily linked to Borrowdale, Langdale, Ambleside, Ullswater, Keswick.
