Located in Haikou city, Banana Property is the best option for people who want a good value place to sleep.
Haikou Banana Hostel was opened by an English man and his Chinese wife in 2007. We are the first official International Youth Property opened by a foreigner in the whole of China. We are also the first Hostel in Haikou.
We offer simple, clean rooms. You can stay in either the dormitory or a private room. Our rooms consist of a bed, desk, private shower, toilet and sink etc. Some rooms have Chinese style toilet while others have Western style. Rooms have either a fan or air-con.
All rooms have FREE Wi-Fi.
The ground floor is a communal area. There is free wi-fi, a TV with large collection of DVDs, pool table, ping-pong, internet computers and a small garden area where you can sit outside. We also have probably the biggest collection of English language books for exchange in the whole of Hainan (200-300 books).
We have simple western food served from 08:00 - 12:45 in the mornings and in the evenings Wednesday to Sunday 18:00 -21:00 we have authentic Italian pizza and pasta.
Look at a map of Haikou and you can see the Banana hostel is located in a geographically interesting area in the north of Haikou called Haidian Island (æµ·ç"¸å²›, Hǎi diÄÂn dǎo). It is actually a separate island about 3 x 5 km in size. 30 years ago Haidian Island was little more than a fishing village and grazing pasture. Today Haidian Island is rapidly developing and has become a popular, convenient place to stay.
1.7 km to the north of Banana Property is the new Baishamen Park, stroll a few hundred metres through the park and you arrive at the sea. Walk 1km south of Banana Property and you arrive at Haidian River, where lots of traditional wooden fishing boats anchor. In the afternoon the boats return and sell their catch in small markets on the river shore. Cross the bridge over the river and you arrive at the Bell Tower (é'Ÿæ¥¼, ZhÃ…Âng l�u) and the start of the historic old centre of Haikou. Here you can explore the maze like network of the distinctive decaying Qilou architecture and find real life community temples hidden in the back alleys. You can also discover weird and exotic food for sale at the Dong Men market in this area (live Cobra snakes for example). Continue south and you will see East Lake and Haikou Park. If you are interested in Chinese martial arts you can see local practitioners of Push Hands (推手, TuÄ«shÇ'u) at Haikou Park in the morning. Cross the road from the park and you are in one of the main busy shopping areas.
Banana Property suggests you rent one of our bikes and cycle through the city to the west coast. You must be careful cycling through the city, but after a few kilometers there is a long coastal path with the sea, beach, and palm trees in sight.
Banana Property is very close to the main campus of Hainan University (æµ·åÂ-大å¦, Hǎin�n d�xu�). If you want to improve your Mandarin, the University has lessons for foreigners of all levels. We are just 500 metres from both the south and east gate entrances. The south gate entrance (Ã¥Â-é-¨, Nan men) is also a bustling street food area. In the evening there are many street snack foods to try. There is also a long line of tropical fruits stalls, Chinese restaurants, and a KFC on the same road.
If you want to try the local beer, Heping Avenue (Ã¥'Œå¹³å¤§éÂ", Heping dadao) Bar Street is just 1km to the east of Banana Hostel. Here there are many small local style bars serving beer from around 6RMB. These bars open in the evening and stay open late. In the evening many small BBQs also open. You can get fresh BBQ seafood, chicken, sweetcorn etc for very reasonable prices.
If you want an inexpensive place to sleep and maybe meet some other people, you are welcome to stay at the Haikou Banana Hostel.

Haikou Property is located in the North-East of Haikou City. We are on a large island called Haidian Dao (海甸岛).
We are located down an alley on Renmin Avenue (Chinese: Renmin Dadao 人民大道).
We are near to where Renmin Ave and San Lu (海甸三路) cross. On one corner of this crossing there is a Kentucky Fried Chicken. On another corner is a purple China EverBright Bank.
Make sure you are on the same side of the road as the EverBright Bank. Stand outside the bank facing the entrance, then turn to your left. Walk a few metres and you will pass a 24 hour soyamilk restaurant on your right-hand side. Walk a further 20 metres and you will see a red restaurant with 'Fule Restaurant' written in English in white letters. Continue a few more metres and the next building is another restaurant. It is black and red and has white Chinese characters on it, it's called YiJiaYi 壹加壹. (In front of this restaurant is a bus stop. On the opposite side of the road there is an internet bar and a green China Post.)
If facing the black and red YiJiaYi restaurant, you should see the Haikou Banana Property sign on your left, pointing behind the restaurant. Haikou Property is about 100 metres along the path, behind the restaurant. We are the second villa on the left hand side and have a yellow wall.
Important information if you get a taxi:
Not all taxi drivers know about us, so it is often easier to ask for the Kentucky Fried Chicken (Chinese: KenDaJi) on Renmin Dadao in Haidian Dao.
If you can speak some Chinese all you need to say is:
Haidian Dao, Renmin Dadao, Ken Da Ji.
Another useful tip for dealing with taxi drivers is to give them the Haikou Banana Property address. The taxi driver can then call the property to find directions.
Do not expect taxi drivers to be able to speak English!
***From Haikou Airport:
Taxi from the airport costs around 50 RMB. Make sure you bargain the price first. Or, take the airport bus to the airport hotel (MinHang BinGuan). Then change to the 19 bus, get off at JingHai HuaYuan on Renmin Road (near KFC).
***From Haikou West Train Station:
The train station is in the far west of the city. A taxi to the property will cost around ￥40.
***From Haikou East Station (High Speed Rail from Sanya or other parts of Hainan):
Bus:
Get on buses 11, 23, or 44 at 'Shāngāo cūnkǒu' bus stop (山高村口站) on Fèngxiáng Road 凤翔路 (see map).
Get off bus at 'Jīng hǎi huāyuán' bus stop (京海花园) on RénmÃn Ave 人民大道.
Detailed bus directions:
• Exit the Haikou East high speed train station.
• Turn left (north) at the road in front of the station.
• Walk about 100 metres north to the T junction.
• Turn right (east) at the T junction to catch bus 44, heading east.
• Or, Turn left (west) and cross over the road and catch bus 11 or 23, heading west.
• Buses cost 1 RMB (put 1 RMB in slot next to driver).
