Join Global Gypsies on our personally escorted, nature-based tours to the Australian Outback!
Have you dreamed of exploring Australia in your own (or a hired) 4x4 vehicle? Of experiencing the timeless, remote beauty of the "outback"? Now you can achieve your dream accompanied by people you know and trust - travelling in a small convoy led by an expert guide - independent, but not alone.
On some safaris, you can drive your own - or a hired - 4WD vehicle, and travel in the safety of a small convoy led by an expert guide. 4WD tuition is part of the package and no previous off-road experience is needed. Choose from self-catering or participatory catering safaris.
On other adventures, you'll travel as a passenger in comfy safari vehicles.
Jeremy Perks, Director of Global Gypsies and 2004 Tour Guide of the Year, leads most of the safaris. Jeremy is a professional Tour Guide, Honorary CALM Ranger, experienced four-wheel driver and a qualified motor mechanic (petrol & diesel). He is extremely knowledgeable about the local flora, fauna and history and is trained in remote area first-aid.
Some tours are led by other highly experienced guides who are employees or business colleagues of Global Gypsies. We only work with the best tour operators, and our clients are sure to have the best holiday experience possible - no matter which destination they choose..
There is no typical day on our outback adventures - each one is new and different as we explore the remote areas of Australia. The only consistency is that clients are well looked after by professional staff and enjoy top quality service, great scenery and memorable experiences. Some tours are catered while others are self-catering. Activities include four-wheel-driving, wildlife viewing, bushwalking, river trips, visits to interesting local attractions, viewing Aboriginal rock art, cultural performances, star-gazing and more.
Age range, type of group
On most of our tours, travellers are 40+, keen to learn about new places and meet new people. Our tours attract singles, couples, friends and grey nomads. Most Global Gypsies clients have a sense of adventure, a positive attitude and a big curiosity and are looking for a holiday with a difference. They enjoy the professionalism and friendly atmosphere of our tours and can feel secure knowing that they are travelling "independent but not alone".
The convoys on our self-drive 4WD 'tagalong tours' in the Aussie Outback are a mixture of private and hired 4WD vehicles and numbers are strictly limited. Clients should be reasonably fit and hold a current driver's licence. No previous off-road experience is necessary.
Sleeping and meals
Our outback tours are primarily camping, when we sleep in tents under the stars (or in camper trailers towed by our clients). We stay in a combination of caravan parks, campgrounds and "bush camps". Clients hiring bushcamper style 4WD vehicles usually sleep inside them - they are a very comfortable home on wheels! Ask us for a recommendation of vehicle hire companies.
We provide catering on many of our 4WD 'tagalong' tours in Australia (some tours are self-catered - please refer to the individual tour for details).
Policies & Restrictions
No pets. Children are discouraged on extended safaris. Camper trailers and/or caravans are acceptable on SOME outback tours - please check the individual requirements of the tour you wish to join.
Tour costs start from $200 per person day. Please review the individual tour for exact prices.
