Take part in an incredible experience of walking high mountain meadows with only a small group of fellow travellers and a naturalist guide. Our lodge to lodge program is one of North America's best hiking experiences, combining awe inspiring scenery with remote locations, comfortable lodging and superb meals. The programs begin with 2 days at world famous Lake Louise introducing you to great hiking in Banff National Park, followed by 4 or 5 days at Golden Alpine Holidays' backcountry lodges in the Selkirk Mountains of BC.
The lodges for the 2nd half of the trip are located at treeline in the Esplanade Range of the Selkirk Mountains. Reached by helicopter, the area is a hiker's paradise with high ridge walks, easily accessed summits, alpine lakes and millions of wildflowers. On one of the days, you'll traverse the range to a second lodge, needing only to carry your personal gear plus bedsheets. All of our food will be transported separately to the lodges.
Day 1 Begin at Calgary where your guide will meet you early afternoon at either the International Airport, or a hotel in the city. At the Lake Louise Inn your guide will set a time for a brief introduction, after which you are free to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening.
Day 2 Today will be a full day of hiking, along the shores of the lake and on up to the Plain of Six Glaciers
Day 3 An early morning start to meet the folks from Golden Alpine Holidays at 8:00 AM. After an exciting flight along the edge of the Esplanades, we arrive at Sunrise lodge around lunchtime with plenty of time to spare for some afternoon hiking.
Day 4 Strike out on a full day hike with great opportunities for ridge walks, "peak bagging" and also visits to many of the tiny lakes dotting the range.
Day 5 Traverse to either Meadow or Vista Lodge. Depending on weather and group fitness, we make a side trip to the summit of Cupola Peak (elev. 2,700m) for one of the best views of the Mt. Sir Donald.
For those guests staying a 4th night, there will be another full day of hiking in the area around one of the lodges.
Day 6 or Day 7 After a final breakfast, we await our helicopter to pick us up and return us to civilization. Transfer to Calgary follows.
** The order in which lodges are traversed is subject to change.
Prerequisites for joining this trip include general good health and a desire to explore nature in an active way. The program is rated as intermediate, with daily walking distances being between 7 and 10 kms and elevation gains of between 300m and 500m. You must be fit enough to walk for 6 to 7 hrs. over varied and uneven terrain. As with our other programs, it is suitable for persons of all ages.
