We offer personalised, guided, snorkeling tours, showing customers how to catch their own abalone. Our guides are very experienced, and know the best places to catch abalone. All gear and licencing are included in the tour price.
An Abalone Adventures day tour is an opportunity to enjoy a fantastic snorkeling
experience - and savour a feast of one of the worlds most delicious seafoods. Our guides know the best and most scenic areas to find abalone in shallow water. The areas we go to are unspoilt and rich in wildlife. The underwater sights are quite amazing, from kelp forests, through to reefs teeming with fish - and Abalone. The snorkeling is quite relaxing, and no prior experience is necessary. All licencing for abalone collecting is included in tour price.
On a typical day, your guide will collect you from your accomodation at about 8.00 AM ( In the Hobart area. ) and take you to a pristine coastal location somewhere in the South East of Tasmania. ( Location chosen on the day to suit weather conditions, but usually in the Port Arthur area. ) Your guide will fit every one out with all the snorkeling gear they need ( Wetsuit, flippers, face-mask etc. ) and then he will individually guide each person in the water, showing them how to find and collect abalone. It's easy! The abalone are abundant, and can be found in only 1 - 2 meters of water. Each person is licenced to take ten abalone for the day, and most of our customers catch at least 6 or so. It is a regular occurence for a customer to catch the bag limit of ten abalone for the day!
Your guide will clean the abalone that are caught, and you may elect to have some or all of them cooked up in a gourmet feast. Enjoy one of the most renowned seafoods in the world, while you take in the wonderful, unspoilt scenery.
At the end of the day, relax as your guide returns you to your accomodation, usually around 4.00 PM
Age range, type of group
We welcome people of ages from about 10 years old and up, especially family groups. The level of fitness required to participate in an Abalone tour is not great. Most people of average fitness find the tour quite easy. Children younger than 10 years of age may be considered if they are confident in the water. It is preferable that the customer be able to swim, but not essential. We have had some customers who could not swim, who were successful at collecting some abalone by wading in very shallow water.
Sleeping and meals
Lunch and morning + afternoon refreshments are included in the tour price. ( Lunch is usually an Abalone "cookup" at the sea-side )
