Activity/Tour

The Bay of Fundy is magnificent, the islands striking. The tides are near 30 ft. high. The Finback, Minke, Humpback and Right Whales Dr. Chuck will talk with you about come to feed in this rich ecosystem and are all within the range of our swift Ocean Going Boat. Trips are 2 ½ to 3 hours with the wildlife and the whales. We take a maximum of 6 people.

This is the wild and not a zoo; however, we only missed once during the time the Whales were here in 2004, i.e. did not see a whale only once between July 7 and October 29.

You not only see the whales but have the opportunity to help Dr. Chuck Collect information about the Whales. Some of the most important insights have come from people just asking questions that no one else had thought to phrase just that way. In this our 6th year of operation Dr. Chuck expects sightings to be interesting.

The Boat is an ocean going Thunderbird Formula 242LH powered by twin engines. It normally runs in the range of 30 MPH. Because we are the Fastest Boat in the service we can cover more area when we are in the search mode and spend more time with the whales when we are find them. It doesn’t take us as long to get there as it does in other boats. Because we are low too the water we are often much closer to the whales then others.

We have all of the safety equipment and meet and/or exceed the Coast Guard requirements for safety.

Even though the boat is smaller then others we do have a toilet on board so that you do not have to worry if the trip takes a little longer then planned because the whales are particularly entertaining.

Typical Day

A typical Trip leaves the St. Andrews Wharf and goes out through the Islands stopping to look at Eagles, Sea Birds, Seals, Fishing Weir, Harbor Porpoise and a Salmon Aquaculture site before searching for the Whales. We normally spend more time with the Whales then anything else. It should also be noted that the order in which we do things is not always the same.

The whales spend 4 or 5 minutes or so under water and about 6 seconds on the surface. A typical Humpback Breach will take about 2 seconds or so. As we watch we talk about what we are seeing.

The Whales are tied to the tide, not the time of day. They tend to start moving around shortly after the tide changes settling down only after the tidal flow has started up again.

Age range, type of group

Surge Tours appeal to those with a spirit of adventure who like to ask questions and don’t mind telling others what they think. Our boat is fast so we sometimes clear the water when conditions are right. Adventure, thrill seeking, is not what we are all about, it is a bonus. We are about seeing nature, the ecosystem and Brain Storming about what is going on. We can do this because we normally have no more then 6 patrons, my technician and the tour Leader, Dr. Chuck. Dr. Chuck has an earned Ph.D.

Age is not so much a factor as is interest. If whales and the marine ecosystem do not interest you. If you want to be told everything. If you want to have the whales pointed out to you then my tour is not for you. If you want to be part of the team for a time then please join us.

Policies & Restrictions

We do have some restrictions. We do not take anyone weighing less then 35 pounds. There is no smoking on the Boat. We normally do not take pets on board unless they do not shed. Pet hair does clog our bilge pump.

If you would like to bring a snack or a non-alcoholic beverage along please do. Yes, we have a toilet.
