Solmundson Gesta Hus
Set in the heart of Lake Winnipeg, a little more than two hours north of Winnipeg, the province’s capital, Hecla Provincial Park contains some of the finest recreational lands in Manitoba. Rugged limestone cliffs, pelican and cormorant nesting colonies, vast marshes and forest and a thriving moose population share the island with remnants of the original Icelandic settlement and some of the finest boating and swimming waters on Lake Winnipeg.
Accessible year round via Highway #8 and a modern causeway, Hecla Provincial Park features beaches, hiking trails, interpretive programs, and one of Canada’s finest golf courses during the summer; cross country ski trails, ice fishing and snowmobiling in the winter. It is one of Manitoba’s most heavily visited provincial parks.

Hecla Shoreline
Four generations of the Solmundson Family lived on Hecla Island between the original settlement by the Icelandic settlers over 100 years ago and the opening of Hecla Provincial Park in 1970. In 1987 the Solmundsons modernized and renovated their family home to open a “gesta hus” (guest house in Icelandic) combining European style bed and breakfast accommodations with North American conveniences.
The Gesta Hus is situated on 43 acres of private property with in the park, located next to the church at the north end of historic Hecla Village. The house features four guest rooms, and a shared living room, and dining room. A hearty full breakfast is included with the price of the room and usually includes waffles made with spelt grain, fresh fruit, ponnukokor (which are Icelandic crepes rolled with brown sugar), and sausages. In the style of Icelandic hospitality guests find that the coffee pot is always “on”, and are encouraged to chat with fellow guests from around the world.

We have four guest rooms. Two Queen and two double. All rooms have sinks and hairdryers. Each room has one bed and a view of the lake.

Amenities

You are encouraged to socialize with your hosts and other guests, to play cards or games, to read or watch movies from our extensive collection. You can also sit on the veranda, in the gazebo, or in the outdoor hot tub to enjoy a view of the lake, to gaze at the stars and to enjoy the peace and quiet. You can also watch an extraordinary number of birds and other wildlife in the perennial gardens or fruit trees. Guests are usually welcomed by Odin or Loki our resident cats. Bring your fishing equipment, bathing suits, golf clubs, hiking boots, and be sure to consult your hosts to ensure you enjoy all the facilities of Hecla Island Provincial Park.

Services Offered

Ask your hosts about sessions on their amazing machines. You can enjoy a spa session using the SOQI Bed with the Chi Machine & 3 Hothouses, an Electro Reflex Energizer session or an E-Power session. You can also ask your hostess for a Reiki session. Spa sessions are available in 1/2 hour increments.
