Castle Hohen Niendorf, close by Baltic Sea resort Kühlungsborn, has awakened from its Cinderella-sleep… the park road leading to the castle was restored at the end of 2008, a new playground was built, the renovation of the castle itself was finished in July2010.

Start your day in the hunting lodge Hohen Niendorf, for example, by going for a run in the adjacent castle park.

The Story of the Castle Gardens Begins in 1866...

… when the well-known garden architect Wilken of Rostock established an English landscape garden in this location.

He incorporated the stone and bronze age megalith tombs in the vicinity and had conifers (such as Douglasia, yew and cypress) from all continents imported. By the beginning of the 20. Century, castle park Hohen Niendorf was well acclaimed amongst garden enthusiasts fascinated by the rare plants and the design, already.

The 15 m tall Ilex or the gigantic, gnarled stone oak, both more than 120 years old, continue to be quite a sight. The rhododendron growing throughout the park adds a splash of color to the firs and other woody plants from North America, the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Japan.

Hunting Lodge Hohen Niendorf is surrounded by the beautiful castle park with its important rare trees, megalith tombs, various sculptures and the idyllic pond.

The extensive park on the 70000 sq.m. castle grounds offers many secluded corners to rest, and the large rhododendron, giant trees, megalith tombs, diverse sculptures, and swan lake invite you to walk and discover. It is all in peace and quiet, with large lawn and forest areas for the children to play in, with no “access forbidden”-signs in sight. For the young ones, the park road in front of the castle offers a nice playground with rope pyramid, streetball court, table tennis, and more….

The Story of Hohen Niendorf:

Hohen Niendorf ist part of Bastorf and located on a rise some 1.5 km to the southeast of Bastorf proper. The closest larger city is the Baltic Sea resort town Kühlungsborn at 5 km distance.

Niendorf war already settled in the Early Neolithic (9500-3300 B.C.); the two megalith tombs still extant are testament to that. The hill tombs at Dornbusch and in the Bastorfer Holm are from the Bronze Age. The settlement then called Nypendorp was established by Germans in the 13. Century, it was first mentioned 1318.

During the Thirty-Years-War (1618-1648), Hohen Niendorf was the residence of the Bülow family. Oberjägermeister Gottlieb Heinrich von Brand bought the castle 1761. After his death in 1770, the tragic next 100 years during which the castle repeatedly changed hands, occurred.

In 1864/65, Friedrich Bobsien had a manor house built here.

One year later, the landscape park of 70000 m² size was established, following the plans of the Rostock garden architect Wilken.

Ca. 1900, Landrat Helmuth von Oertzen-Roggow bought Niendorf as dowry for his daughter on her wedding with the later Count Hand Wichard von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, who had the manor house repurposed as hunting lodge with an added tower.

During WWII, the castle functioned as children’s home and later as refugee camp. The land reform in the area of Bad Doberan started here, in 1945. A sign posted at the entrance still reads “Junkerland in Bauernhand” – noble land in farmer’s hand… Count von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff was driven off, the grounds separated and given away.

In the 70’s, the building served as a union school. Older people still remember how, when the black Tatra came around, union boss Harry Tisch was here, and high times often ensued.

After the German reunification, quite a few investors got burnt trying their luck with the object. Various projects, even a “beauty farm,” were suggested.

Since 2007, when the well-known architect Nicolaus Wöhlk of Kühlungsborn bought the castle, it has finally begun to awaken from its sleep. The renovations were finished in June 2010!

Castle and castle grounds have the status of protected architectural heritage.

Not only the castle, but also the park was reconstructed. The former “jungle” has made way to new paths, fewer underbrush, restored sightlines, and newly created lawns and flower meadows.

In the village, there is a pottery workshop, and at the village edge towards Bastorf, a great spot for barbecues and picnics in green surroundings was established.

Legend and Lore:

It is said that lots of giants used to inhabit this area, who collected tons of large stones because they wanted to build themselves a path through the Baltic Sea to Denmark.

One day, tired from their exhausting work, they made a pause, had a look around, and were so taken aback by the beauty of the area, they decided they had found their home and dropped it all. Thus, the Kühlung was created.
