This is a privately owned estate, amidst a beautiful sheltered river valley, with mountain views, protected by forest and the wilderness of New Zealand’s unpolluted nature. We have the purest water, the freshest air and a naturally peaceful environment which automatically supports life. he property is reached via a 15k gravel road, with approximately 7k from the main gate to the lodge itself, meaning it is extremely isolated. It is noticeable for its tranquillity, clean air and water and outstanding nature. Close to Milford and Doubtful Sound, ideal day trips. Day walks on the famous tracks, Kepler and Milford have day hikes from here. Riding, ATV adventures, Wild Nature Trails and of course Lord of The Rings and Hobbit Tours.

Helicopters can land directly in front of your chalet and our private airfield can accommodate light aircraft.

Directions by Road to Takaro

From Queenstown or Invercargill take highway 6.

Follow highway 94 via Mossburn in the direction of Te Anau. Approximately 5 km before Te Anau turn right onto Kakapo Road. There is a small wooden house on the corner of Kakapo Road which is a replica of one of the Takaro’s chalets...

Continue on Kakapo Road which will turn into a gravel road. Follow the signposts to TAKARO. After 1.5km on the gravel road turn left onto Takaro Road (not Dale Road). Follow this road to Takaro’s main gate. The gate is usually closed, but not locked. After another 7km you will reach Takaro.

The total drive is about 28 km from the beginning of Kakapo Road. Please allow at least 35 minutes driving time and be careful driving on the gravel road which is quite narrow and partly winds through forest.
