Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac yet short walking distance to sport stadiums, sky car, shops, bars, clubs, restaurants, parks and of course the beach, Surf and the City offers a more chilled, relaxed hostel experience!

The property is situated in an old Edwardian style house that is over 120 years old and features high ceilings, ceiling fans, large wrap-around terrace, big garden with swimming pool, BBQ (braai) area, communal lounge, kitchen and dining room, bar area, plenty of chill out spots and a great atmosphere.

We also offer a free daily shuttle service to the beach, breakfast included with the price (toast, spreads, cereal, fruit, tea/coffee), laundry service, a large selection of movies, surf movies, games and books, plus there is free wi-fi and a travel desk booking facility. We also have a BBQ (braai) night at least once a week where you can experience a traditional South African braai. Limited surfboard and wetsuit rentals are also available to our guests.

Security comes in the form of electric fencing, electric gates, panic buttons linked to our security service, secure windows and at peak times a night security guard to ensure the safety of our guests and their property at all times.

Transfers can be arranged from airport at a fee of R200 for 1 - 4 people (4 people max). Free transfers available from the Durban Station to Surf and the City.

Directions

From the Durban Station:

Exit the Durban Station parking lot and turn left into Kemasinga Road and shortly after turn left into Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue). Take the Argyle Road off ramp on the left and travel straight along the road, crossing over Umgeni Road where Argyle Road will then become Sandile Thusi Road. After the Umgeni Road intersection, take a right into Florida Road and travel approximately 800m up the road until you reach your first intersection with traffic lights. Take a right at the traffic lights into Gordon Road and travel all the way to the end of Gordon Road until you see the cycle shop (Cyclesphere). We are two properties before the cycle shop at 12 Gordon Road, Morningside. Look for the Surf and the City sign and ring the bell for assistance.

From the South Coast / Wild Coast:

Follow the signs direction Durban and N2 North.
Keep left direction Stanger, North Coast, Pietermaritzburg, N2 North
+/- 10 km at big intersection follow signs to Durban City
As you enter Durban keep in the middle lane.
Take the Ridge Road / Tollgate / Berea off ramp. (Semi-circle bridge)
Cross over Ridge Road and continue direction of the city, keep in left lane - this is Berea Road North.
Continue over Musgrave Road and turn left into Botanic Gardens Road.
Pass The Botanical Gardens, now called Problem Mkhize Road.
Pass Bread Ahead Bakery & Woolworths Food store.
Cross over Marriot Road and at the next traffic light turn left into Clarence Road. First right is Gordon Road.
Go all the way along Gordon Road until you reach the end of the road. You will see a cycle shop (Cyclesphere) on the left hand side on the corner.

From Pietermaritzburg / Drakensberg:

You will be traveling along the N3.
As you enter Durban keep in the second left lane.
Take the Ridge Road / Tollgate / Berea off ramp.
Cross over Ridge Road and continue direction of the city, keep in middle lane - this is Berea Road North.
Continue over Musgrave Road and turn left into Botanic Gardens Road at The Institute of Technology.
Pass The Botanical Gardens, now called Problem Mkhize Road.
Pass Bread Ahead Bakery & Woolworths Food store.
Cross over Marriot Road and at the next traffic light turn left into Clarence Road. First right is Gordon Road.
Go all the way along Gordon Road until you reach the end of the road.

From the North Coast / Zululand:

You will be traveling along the N2.
+/- 35 km north of Durban take the Ballito off ramp.
Turn left, around two traffic circles and at traffic light right - direction Durban / Umhlanga M4.
Continue till you enter Durban, on the right will be Moses Mabida Soccer Stadium.
Keep in the right lane, at first intersection turn right into Sandile Thusi.
Continue up Sandile Thusie Road, cross over Umgeni & Lillian Ngoyi.
Turn right into Florida Road, continue all the way up until you reach the Gordon Road / Florida Road intersection.Turn right into Gordon Road.
Go all the way along Gordon Road until you reach the end of the road. You will see a cycle shop (Cyclesphere) on the left hand side on the corner.

From King Shaka International Airport:

1. Head southwest for 450 m
2. Take the 1st left toward Mdloti St and travel 350 m
3. Turn left onto Mdloti St (toll road) and travel 1,7 km
4. Continue onto M65 (toll road) and travel 700 m
5. Keep right at the fork and merge onto N2 and travel for 12,0 km
6. Take exit 182 for M41 toward Mount Edgecombe/Phoenix/Umhlanga and travel for 650 m
7. Turn left onto M41 and travel 2,7 km
8. Take the ramp onto M4 and travel 11,8 km
9. Turn right onto Argyle Rd/Sandile Thusi Rd and continue to follow Sandile Thusi Rd for 1,2 km
10. Turn right onto Florida Rd and travel approximately 800m until first set of traffic lights
11. Turn right into Gordon Road at traffic lights and travel to the end of the road where you will see a cycle shop (Cyclesphere).
12. Surf and the City is two properties before the cycle shop at number 12 Gordon Road, Morningside, Durban. Look for the Surf and the City sign and ring the bell for assistance.
