Minuteman Missile National Historic Site was established by Congress in 1999 to preserve two 1960's missile sites: Launch Control Facility Delta-01 and Launch Facility (missile silo) Delta-09. It is the only unit of the National Park Service devoted to the history of the Cold War - an ideological, economic, and political struggle between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) lasting almost 50 years that caused fear, panic, and distrust. Developed in the 1960's as part of a triad of air, land, and sea-based nuclear weapons, Minuteman missiles held the power to destroy civilization, but this destructive force also acted as a nuclear deterrent which maintained peace and prevented war.
