We stayed in Ocean Suites and bought the all inclusive package. Rooms are bit dated but very comfortable and clean. Among the restaurants offered by Renaissance, Aquarius is the best, excellent sea food. Private island is a place from heaven, two lagoons form natural pools of turquoise waters. Compared to Palm Island where you have to pay $100+ per person to assess the the island, free access to the hotel's island is really a great deal.
Staff is generally friendly. You can also use the facilities of the Renaissance Hotel across the Marina where the restaurants and a high end shopping mall located.
The only downside is that the hotel is in Oranjestad where the shops close at 7:00 PM. Â There is not much going on after 7:00 PM except Casinos in this town. However you can take a short taxi drive for $11 to go to Palm Beach area where there is lot going on.
We enjoyed our vacation a lot.

I picked this hotel based on a recommendation and the fact that it has a private island. The hotel is nice with air conditioned rooms that have a wet bar, 2 lcd televisions with American tv stations, nice bathroom with double vanity and ceiling fans. Â There is also a lot of shops close by the ocean suites with Starbucks, a theater and casino. Â The only real negative part for me is lobby isn't air conditioned and its the only place you can get free wi-fi (wired internet is offered in the rooms for a fee). Â
The ocean suites has a interesting layout. Â The bedroom has just enough room for the bed and a small chest of drawers with a tv but not much else. Â Also, oddly their are two doors into the bathroom. Â One is in the bed room next to the bedroom door and the other is just outside the bedroom door. Â Seems like they could have done with just one outside the bedroom door. Â
The wet bar is very nice with a sink, refrigerator, coffee maker (with coffee) and microwave. Â If you don't do all-inclusive and make a trip to the grocery store you can save a ton of money by making your own meals in the room. Â We did this and enjoyed it because we got what we wanted at the grocery store.
The private island is really nice. Â The hotel has boats that take you over to the island for free every 15 mins. Â Their is a gift shop and restaurant on the island with a family friendly and adult only side. Â Personally I liked the family friendly side because its is larger and close to the restaurant. Â The adult only side does have flamingos and an inlet where you can see fish but their isn't much else on that side.
Lastly keep in mind this hotel is downtown. Â They have lots of high end shopping in and around the hotel but most of the action is up in eagle and palm beach area (10-15 minutes away). Â Its easy enough to take a bus (recommended since taxi can run you 2-4 times more each way)Â up to that area for night life, shopping and activities. Â Also, currently (June 2013) there is major construction on the main street behind the marina side of the hotel. Â It will be really nice once they finish.

We stayed at the Marina property, which was about average. It fits the bill for basics, but there are much better properties and amenities in the Palm Beach area down the road. Pros and cons below:
* A private island that the Renaissance owns (you'd do yourself a disservice if you don't go)
* Extremely nice room service guys
* Food was excellent at the Aquarius and room service
* Pool and Starbucks in the lobby
* Good restaurants within walking distance, like 'Que Pasa?' and 'Delimar'
* No internet available in the rooms
* Very, very, very touristy
* No beach near hotel (have to take boat to island, or a bus/taxi to other beaches)
* Our room was extremely dark
