The hotel was clean and the staff was polite and helpful. The tall ceilings in the room were a nice touch. I did wish the room had a refrigerator and microwave. I did have an issue with the tv remote and it was replaced promptly. The hotel is replacing their old televisions with flat panel ones but not necessarily the remotes. This remote was just old and tired. The wireless internet was problematic my night there. It showed up on my computer but I could not connect (unsuccessful) even from the lobby and at least one other guest had complained about the same issue (mid-afternoon). I could connect to the hotel across the street to several of their routers so it was not a problem with my computer. They have only one router and everyone has to share the bandwidth so when it did finally come up it was a bit slow. The wireless was down again in the morning so I just gave up. The breakfast was good.

This was an average Hampton Inn, but the management and service were POOR.
I booked a non-smoking, King. I was given room #100. This room is IN THE HOTEL LOBBY, five feet from the check in desk. I asked for a different room, but was told they were completely booked. The lobby flooring, (ceramic tile) extended right to the door of my room, and channelled every sound right under the door.
I had to put up with the noise of guests in the lobby TV area, chatting and laughing until 2:00 AM. I was woken up at 5:30 AM by several loud patrons, who were talking, and telling jokes for 45 minutes. The desk clerk couldn't ask them to quiet down because they were IN THE LOBBY. When checking out I spoke to "Raymond" who told me he was the owner of the hotel.
I complained vigorously about the room and it's location. Raymond told me that the room was designed to be a meeting room, but the contractor goofed and built it as a guest room.
He conceded that it was their "worst room." I told him I was very unhappy with the situation and that the room should not be rented as a guest room. I also said I was unhappy about paying retail rates for such substandard lodging. Raymond offered no concession, or rate reduction of any kind. He simply smiled and said "hope you'll visit again." Clueless!

But we were very satisfied! We went to other hotels in Taos just to see how they were and believe me this is the best one for the money. Others are very old and not kept up.
It is a little ways from town but well worth it, actually less traffic on that end and only about a mile into the actual square.

This hotel is under renovation. We were not informed of this when we booked. Our room had wet varnish on the doors (my hand print has been captured for eternity), paint on the carpet, little furniture, and reeked of paint fumes (we had to open the window). In addition, it's not close to anything. The staff was not knowledgable regarding transportation options either, so we had to figure it out for ourselves. We would not return.
