On arrival my first impression was great, staff was exceptionally friendly, very warm welcome even though we arrived past midnight. The room however wasn't exactly as I'd hope for especially for a penthouse suite at an almost 5star resort.
There was a beautiful tropical flower arrangement on the table which was nice, and fresh baked cookies in a jar in the room. However, there were several things that to me was worse than some of the 2star hotels I've stayed at. The blanket on the bed was stained and filthy, as well as the couch and chairs for the table. This is probably my biggest complaint, the cleanliness, not a good feeling :(
Also the poolside lounge mattresses were also filthy. The sliding doors in our room didn't shut or seal completely.
Also several other things happened, basic maintenance issues; like the handle on one of the sinks just completely came loose from the wall and was left hanging; the shower drain backed up so bad that I had to put a towel on the inside of the shower against the shower door to keep the bathroom from flooding; there was a panel in the wetbar area that just fell off and nearly scared my husband and I to death:-)
About the Hotel, restaraunt, staff, and excursions:
The Hotel itself was nice. Great location, wonderful views and beach. Pool was very nice.
We did see several rats on top of the ceiling rails wich was a bit of a turn off, but I guess you can expect that in an open air island resort.
The drinks and food were definately overpriced. I don't think the cocktails were that great compaired to others I've had and although in fiji dollars, they were overpriced by at least $5 a drink.
The pizza was great, fish was exceptional, and breakfast buffet was more than expected.
The atmosphere at the Pearl is one of the main things that makes this place good. The restaraunts are all open, you can look at the ocean while you eat, its very nice. Every evening during happy hour and a few hours after they had a band serenading us :)
The staff is wonderful, couldn't ask for better service and hospitality.
The excursions are overpriced as well, although I believe most of them were ran from outside vendors. We did go on a snorkel excursion which wasn't too bad in price. They took us out on a boat to a small island. They also guided our snorkeling tour pointing out beautiful schools of fish, and other neat creatures. After we had our fill they let us walk on the island, pick shells, lounge in the hammock etc...That was such a great experience and well worth the money.
If the Pearl cleaned up a bit and made sure the furniture and bedding is clean, adjust their prices a bit so people can spend more money there instead of going elsewhere, find a way to control the rodents, and fixed minor things it would be a place I would want to return yearly or whenever possible. For the money spent, I was expecting a bit more.

The staff was very friendly but you have to be prepared to be on island time because they did not do anything quickly. The food and beverages were overpriced but there was a wonderful little village down the street that had plenty of places to eat and drink for much less.
