Katalin & Jozsef Hunyady
Building:
The Bat Barn has two BAT Boxes, which are occupied!
We restored the old barn respecting its original structure and style to give it a very warm and unique atmosphere.
For the barn's floors we used almost exclusively local salvage material including wood, old bricks, decorated cement tiles and roof tiles. It all looks great!
We bought most furniture pieces and the doors in nearby villages. We renovated them only when we had to and not excessively.
The guest house heating and hot water system runs on wood that we cut in our own forests in the area. We also have solar panels for hot water.
We strive to reduce waste through composting and recycling.
Rainwater is collected to water the garden, the organic vegetable garden and for the farm (cows and horses).
Our cleaning materials and laundry soaps are home made with ash and organic products.
We garden without chemicals and produce organic vegetables and fruits. Our chickens are free ranged.
We provide cotton bedlinen, down duvet and towels.

Surroundings:
We converted 20 hectares of intensive arable land around the Bat Barn into wooded pastures and meadows. Here we graze our horses and cows. We always privilege biodiversity and aesthetics over production. We do not use artificial fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides, rather we try to recreate habitats suitable for birds tied to traditional and extensive agriculture.
We favour local spices of trees and bushes like English Oak, Turkey Oak, Field Maple, Common Ash, Wild Pear, Hawthorne, Blackthorn and Elder and we get rid of alien invasive species as the Tree of Heaven, the Locust Tree and Oleaster.
To favour large beetles and nesting birds we left many large dead trees standing. We also planted hedges and tree-rows on field borders.
The hay on our meadows is cut as late as possible to maximise flower production and not to endanger breeding birds and mammals.
We only plant forests on arable land and not on grasslands. We plant indigenous species as opposed to fast-growing alien species. We strive to increase the age diversity as well as the vertical diversity of our woods.
We only employ locals and as far as possible use local and locally made products.
We are active members or the Provincial Nature Association of our County
