Tips for beginners
1. Get the right board.
If you're a beginner you want balancing to be as easy as possible. There are boards specifically designed for beginners, which are long and wide to enhance stability and flotation.
2. Get some company.
Have a friend who is good at surfing? Beginners should always surf with a buddy for safety. Taking a course at a surfing school is another option if no friend is readily available, plus things are generally more fun when shared with other people.
3. Pick the right location.
Going to a popular break with large waves is a ticket to get frustrated and potentially hurt yourself as well. If you've never surfed go for a tame, preferable sheltered area where you can work to develop your skill without fear. Being comfortable is often a key factor in enjoying something, so set yourself up for success the best you can.
4.Practice technique.
Before you even hit the water practicing some basic technique is certainly in your best interest. In particular, getting some grasp of the “pop-up†technique (how to stand up) is a good place to start. It may feel silly doing this on dry land without a board but once you're in the water even a little bit of practice will come in handy.
5.Dress for success.
Water temperature is the primary factor to consider when assembling a surfing wardrobe. In some places you might need nothing more than a pair of board shorts and a rash guard (a shirt that prevents irritation from the sun and surfboard wax). Other places a full wet suit is a must, prepare accordingly. Also a leash to connect (by attaching to your ankle) yourself to the board is an essential that you need.
