The biggest sporting event in Sierra Leone is BACK!
Voted ‘Best International Event' at the Running Awards 2017, The Sierra Leone Marathon returns to the streets of Makeni for the 8th edition on 26th May 2019.
It's the biggest and most celebrated sporting event in Sierra Leone, uniting both local and international runners. People from all over the world sign up to be a part of this event, with all participants helping to raise funds in support of Street Child projects whilst getting the opportunity to meet the children they are fundraising to support.
With the local communities supporting you every step of the way, you'll get to experience the genuine passion Sierra Leoneans have for the marathon and will receive overwhelming support every step of the race!
THE RACE!
You have the choice to run 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon through some of the most picturesque landscapes in northern Sierra Leone. You can expect to run on both urban and rural roads - the majority of these are hard-packed mud roads, but also some tarmac.

Typical Day
DAY ONE - Travel by 4x4 convoy to one of Street Child's remote projects and meet some of the rural school children your participation will be supporting.
DAY TWO - Visit the charity's urban projects, meeting recipients of our family business grants and visit the street markets of Makeni.
DAY THREE - Take part in workshops with our in-country staff, hearing more about our work. Spend the afternoon watching the incredible amputee football match and relax at Street Child's own Bar/Restaurant, the Clubhouse.
DAY FOUR - RACE DAY: Take part in this true 'race of a lifetime' through the stunning paths and villages surrounding Makeni.
DAY FIVE - Top off this unique travel experience with a relaxing trip to one of Sierra Leone's stunning beaches: a chance to rest and reflect on 'the world's craziest and most worthwhile marathon.'

OUR TRAVEL PACKAGES
LENGTH OF STAY: Five nights is the standard length of stay for most runners. We will however help organise transport and accommodation for those who wish to stay for a shorter visit.
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS:
All of our travel packages include accommodation, three meals per day and all transport in-country including airport transfers to/from Freetown and to project visit sites.
1*: - Bucket showers, electricity at night, no AC, hostel type accommodation - for the true traveller!
3*: - Showers, electricity, guaranteed fan/AC. Stay in a basic Makeni guest house or hotel with your own private or shared room with toilet and washing facilities.
4*: - Hot showers, electricity, wifi, AC, hotel swimming pool. There are a limited number of premium rooms available in Makeni. Please contact us for availability and we will look to ensure you get the level of accommodation you wish for.
