From the 19th century until the mid-20th century, Old Havana has had a lively nightlife and healthy residents. After the revolution of Fidel Castro in the 1950s, the wealthiest members of Cuban society fled and took with them a substantial part of the economic prosperity with them. In recent years, UNESCA has worked to restore Old Havana. Some areas are falling apart, but retain the charm.

In Old Havana there will be 5 main places. They are known as Plaza de Armas, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de San Francisco and Plaza del Cristo. Near the squares you can find some of the most important attractions of the city. The Muse of the Revolution and the National Museum of Fine Arts will be a few blocks west of the squares. The Church of San Francisco de Asís is a Baroque cathedral of the 18th century with a 40 meter high bell tower, located south of the Plaza de San Francisco.
