Redesigned Alaskan cultural & natural history exhibits feature interactive activities and new acquisitions such as a full-scale locomotive while also offering updated favorites including the life-sized eagle nesting tree, SOS globe, and play ship.


The Alaska State Museum, in the new state-of-the-art Fr. Andrew P. Kashevaroff (APK) State Library, Archives, and Museum building in Juneau, presents Alaska’s unique history and diverse cultures. Exhibits include an expansive collection of Alaska Native materials, fine art, objects from the Russian-American period, mining, fishing, forestry, World War II in Alaska, and tourism. Science-on-a-Sphere is a six-foot globe showing animated displays of planetary environmental data. There is a youth activity room, with a climb-aboard replica of a sailing ship. Three light-filled galleries offer temporary exhibitions. Upstairs, visitors can find the State Library and the State Archives with Alaskana collections, newspapers and magazines, free WiFi, and more. There is a small café on site. Fall, winter and spring hours are 10am - 4pm Tuesday through Saturday. Closed most major holidays.

From the downtown cruise ship docks, stroll 3-5 blocks for about 5-15 minutes along the waterfront past the Main Street traffic light and 1 block further to turn right at the traffic light on Whittier Street. Coming from the airport, drive about 15 minutes along the Egan Highway towards downtown and turn left on Whittier Street at the second stop light after passing the bridge on the right. Look for us in the second building on the left at 395 Whittier Street. There is free visitor parking underneath the building accessed down a steep driveway on the right side of the building.
