The medieval town of Ennis dates from the early thirteenth century, when the local Gaelic Chiefs, The O'Briens gave permission to the Fransiscan monks to build a church on an island in the Fergus river. From this island or "inis", the town got its name Ennis. Today, Ennis is a cosmopolitan town, combining its quaint old narrow streets with their traditional pubs, shops and restaurants, with its busy suburbs. Situated in he centre of County Clare, it is a short drive from the majestic Cliffs of Moher towering over 200 metres over the Atlantic; the unique limestone karst landscape of the Burren, with its prehistoric monuments and religious sites; the unspoilt Loop Head peninsula where nature is still king; or the fish-filled lakes and waterways of East Clare.
