The Great Smoky Mountains represent a rich and diverse area, with old-growth forests, abundant wildlife, and dramatic mountains vistas. We’ll visit the Smokies and the surrounding area at the foot of the Southern Appalachian Highlands, where outdoor activity is at its prime – there’s heavenly hiking on a stretch of the Appalachian and Bartram Trails, wondrous whitewater rafting down the Nantahala River, and bucolic biking around the foothills of the mountains. Round out your excursion through this little corner of heaven with a visit to the magnificent 400 year-old yellow poplars in the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. Warning: may cause spontaneous tree-hugging!
This adventure blends the region's best bicycling routes, hiking trails and waterways into one awe-inspiring, well-rounded leisure adventure for everyone to enjoy.
From atop Wayah Bald, catch glimpses of the Appalachian Trail as it carves through the Great Smoky Mountains. We’ll hike on the AT, and then enjoy an exhilarating descent on the Bartram Trail to the shores of Lake Nantahala, for an afternoon wine & cheese on the water. The first evening, we will be escorted by llama to a mountaintop dinner with a panoramic view of the Nantahala National Forest. Take a step back in time as we visit the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, a magnificent remnant of the original Appalachian Forest with lofty trees up to 400 years old. After enjoying a wood side lunch, get ready for a thrilling whitewater rafting descent down the Nantahala River, the perfect introduction to whitewater. We hike through virgin forests of red spruce and contemplate the craggy peaks veiled in the namesake blue-gray haze. Our hike will venture past three great waterfalls, including Juneywhank Falls, Tom Branch and Indian Creek Falls. The last day, our exhilarating bike loop covers the best terrain that the Smoky Mountain area has to offer! After skirting the edge of the Smokies, enjoy the “road less traveled” and descend through pine forests and over past rolling fields with small creeks which feed into the Tuckasegee River.
Age range, type of group
Our Great Smoky Mountain Excursion can be enjoyed by virtually everyone. Couples, singles, families with children over 7 years of age are all welcome. The adventure is designed first and foremost with 'vacation' as the key element, and although the terrain climbs and drops often, we have designed routes that allow for short options, medium options and for the hardy, long, long options! Nevertheless, our trips are fully supported, so if and when fatigue sets in, and if that's not your game, then give up the bike, take off the hiking shoes and give into relaxing in the great outdoors or in our wonderful accommodations.
Sleeping and meals
Eating well has never been a problem on our tours. You can eat as much or as little as you like. Some choose to snack all day, while others choose to work up their appetite for the fine cuisine later in the day. Either way, active travel is conducive to eating, because you can always pedal the extra mile! Our accommodations include a bed & breakfast virtually right on the edge of the Great Smoky Mtn National Park, and then to really top the trip off, at one of our personally selected inns we actually take a llama trek up to a summit gazebo for an amazing dinner overlooking the mountain range. Simply awesome.
Cell phones and anything having to do with work!
This adventure is 4 days and 3 nights long, starting on a Thursday, and finishing on a Sunday afternoon. You can choose an existing date, or you can create a custom tour dates with us. You certainly can have your own room if you're traveling single, but the rates are based on double occupancy, and a single supplement will apply.
The Smoky Mountains can be enjoyed year-round, although our favorite time of the year to travel there is in the summer and Fall.
