The Swiss Alps at their best!
The second of two new tours for 2018, the Swiss Splendor is conducted on a sub-set of the Classic Alpine Adventure itinerary, focusing on the Swiss Alps.

The Classic itinerary really is the distillation of 45 years of Alpine riding, and is the brilliant motorcycle adventure in the central Alps. But it is a 2 week tour, which is unfortunately longer than most Americans can take off work.

Over 8 riding days, this new itinerary moves at a pace that is an excellent balance between the sport of motorcycling and the lure of the countryside. The daily route suggestions allow one to dawdle and enjoy a place, or charge and ride every great road available. Best of all, it only requires a week, plus a Friday and a Monday away from work.

Everything about the tour is to the standard of the Classic Alpine Adventure-in other words, excellent!

Reading the tour description you will find some sections taken directly from the Classic copy. We use the same hotels, ride the same roads, and have the same great adventure-just a little less of it.

Motorcycles & riders are warmly welcomed
The European Alps are, very simply, the most magical place in the world to ride motorcycles. Within their ramparts huddle villages and farms from the middle ages and winter resorts as new as tomorrow. The contrast of old and new is fascinating and amazingly comfortable. This tour focuses on that magic.

Welcome to Bavaria
Your arrival in Europe is planned to let you catch up with the time lost and be introduced to a new environment. Beginning and ending in Munich, the first day after arrival is a free day, allowing time to visit Munich city, the Olympic Park, the BMW Museum, to lounge in the Englischer Garten or see the Glockenspiel.

Our free days also feature great rides. On those days is your choice to ride, put your feet up and rest, or simply be a tourist.

A great way to become acquainted with the new BMW that will be your transportation (and smile maker!) for the next week is to take a pleasant, relaxing ride through the Bavarian countryside. The scenery takes an exciting turn as the Alps come into view, dominating the horizon. The twisty roads in the foothills of the Alps only hint at the adventure to come.

The first "real" day on the road, moving from one place to another, is through the Allgäu, where the towns ooze Medieval history. A few were Roman towns, and it is remarkable to walk streets that were in use 2,000 years ago. Here it is the norm! The old towns of Marktoberdorf and Kempten will enchant you.

Crossing the border to Austria coincides with the roads getting a bit twistier and the mountains a bit higher. The ruggedness of the peaks gives way to fertile fields and expansive farms.

Stopping at the top of the Furkajoch pass, just before arriving in Rankweil, one can see into Switzerland!

A paradise of mountain passes
Having a first glimpse of the Swiss Alps isn't the same as riding them. So let's get to it! Here one doesn't ride by the mountains looking at them. One rides on the mountains looking down at the valleys! Swiss roads are among the best engineered in the world, and you will soon discover that motorcycling here puts everyplace else you have ridden to shame.

During the next few days, as you explore Switzerland, you may opt to ride the Klausen, Pragel, Brunig, St. Gottard, Lukmanier, Oberalp, Neufenen, Furka, Grmisel, or Susten passes, to name a few of the possibilities! These roads pass scenery that is-with no exaggeration-breathtaking. The villages on the pass roads depend on agriculture, and local farms blend into the landscape perfectly.

A free day in Interlaken allows an opportunity to see the world from the top, with cable car or cog-rail train trips to the Swiss peaks. The infamous Eiger, as well as the Jungfrau, the Monch, the giant, pyramidal Niesen and the Stockhorn are the “local” mountains, making the entire area a place of rugged beauty.

And, of course, free day route suggestions will take you to more amazing locations. The Lauterbrunnen valley, with some 11 major waterfalls cascading off the cliff faces, is simply stunning.

From Interlaken it is but a short hop to Disentis, the next overnight. What isn't traveled in horizontal distance is made up in vertical distance, as the only way through the Andermatt Valley is over a pass-or four! Photo stops and picnic possibilities abound.

Swiss-German culture gives way to Swiss-Romanish upon entering the Engiadina valley, where enthusiastic pass riders may conquer the Flüela, Ofen, Splugen, San Bernardino, Bernina, Albula, Maloja, or Julier passes. Or a combination thereof!

Cross the mighty Stelvio Pass
Tagged as one of the "world's best roads" by the blokes at Top Gear, the Stelvio Pass generates quite a bit of hype. It is an impressive piece of engineering, and the views from the top are quite special. The summit arrives at the perfect time to stop for coffee and a bit of "wow, I am really here" realization. And then come the 48 hairpin turns descending into the beautiful Val Venosta. This is a road you will not forget!

On the other side of the Venosta valley, jutting from the middle of the lake near the top of the Reschen pass, a church steeple hints of the village flooded when the lake was damned. Stop and get the photo. It will be another of the "I was there" photos that will amaze your friends.

A herd of highland cattle may be milling around the end of the driveway to our hotel in Imst. Wherever we travel in the Alps we are reminded again and again of the farming that that keeps the countryside pristine.

Ludwig's castles
The last riding day, already? Let's make it a good one! Start the day with some of the best roads in Bavaria's. Head over the Hahntennjoch. This pass is always impressive, but to head over it first thing in the morning, with the sun at your back and the highlighted scenery all around makes for a very special ride.

The return trip across the same range, following the road up to Berwang is just, ho-hum, more brilliant Alpine riding. Better still is the fact that you have been able to ride all of this before the weekend mobs get there. Having this great pavement and jaw-dropping scenery all to yourself is the icing on the cake!

Before simply putting the Alps in your rearview mirror, take time to be a tourist. Visit “Mad” King Ludwig's World famous Neuschwanstein castle, walk the gardens in his “home” castle Linderhof, or visit a 930 year old church. And then, finally, take more "Rob roads" north to Munich to wrap up this amazing week of adventure.
