History: ‘Tall Ship THANE’ Victoria’s ‘SPRAY’

Joshua Slocum’s voyage alone around the world 120 years ago is among the most famous feats of single-handed voyaging of all time. ‘SPRAY’ was given to Joshua Slocum by a friend in 1892. The vessel had been abandoned in a field seven years earlier. Slocum rebuilt her, then in 1895 struck out on his voyage. Alone aboard the ‘SPRAY’, Slocum covered 46,000 miles in three years. The boats hull form enabled it to self steer under sail. The ‘SPRAY’s’ sailing performance is legendary. ‘Sailing Alone Around The World’ is Joshua Slocum’s account of his voyage. It has been in publication since 1900 and has been the inspiration for many ‘SPRAY’ replicas including the ‘THANE of Victoria’.

‘THANE’ was built in Victoria by Len Pearson. Similar to Slocum, Len found his SPRAY hull in a field where it had been abandoned 10 years earlier.

In 1972 he traded his ’68 Chev for the hull. Victoria was experiencing a building boom which provided an excellent source of quality timber and scrap metal. Made largely of recycled materials, ‘THANE’ was meticulously built in five years on Finger One at Fisherman’s Wharf.

She is 57 ft overall, 39.5 ft on deck and powered by a 110 hp Isuzu diesel. Although THANE has yet to circumnavigate, she self steers like the original ‘SPRAY’. She is stoutly built and like her predecessor, she’s a working girl. ‘Currently THANE is owned and operated by Rob McCallum and Pete Reid. A 3-HOUR SAIL (2013) LTD departs 3 times daily from ‘A’ dock in front of the Empress Hotel in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

A 3-HOUR SAIL $89 per person (tax included):

This tour is all about the tall ship sailing experience. We motor out of the harbour, haul the sails and set our course. The destination varies with the wind and tide. We sail within a 15 km radius within Royal Roads which includes: the historic Fisgard Lighthouse, the Naval harbour, Esquimalt Lagoon up to Whitty’s Lagoon. We go out as far as the shipping lane and down to Clover Point and Trial Island . There is a variety of marine life and spectacular scenery. Departure times are 9:00 am and 2:00 pm daily. These times may vary slightly due to weather and special events taking place in Victoria’s inner harbour.

A 1.5-Hour Evening Harbour Cruise $65 per person (tax included):

This tour is mainly a inner harbour tour, but we do try to get out and sail if the weather conditions are favorable. We begin with a harbour tour sharing the history of this busy port and pay a visit the newest float home community. Then, if the conditions allow us, we head out to the outer harbour with the cruise ships, ferries and float planes who ply the harbour regularly. We stop at the First Nations Land And Sea mural which is the largest mural in the world. Then out to the open seas where we shut down the engine, haul the headsail and slowly sail in as the sun sets behind the Sooke Hills (not all evening sails encounter a sunset due to the changing time of the sunset) There is opportunity to view eagles, great blue herons, seals, dolphin and occasionally whales. On returning we are are treated to the City of Victoria alight. Departure time is 7:30 nightly.
